ODBC = Open Database Connectivity

Allows a front-end product such as Visual Basic to talk correctly to any popular back-end database.
A standard or open API for accessing a database. By using ODBC statements in a program, you can access files in a number of different databases, including Access, dBase, Excel, and Text. A separate module or driver is needed for each database to be accessed.
ODBC is based on the Open Group standard SQL Call-Level Interface. It allows programs to use SQL requests to access databases without knowing the proprietary interfaces to the databases. ODBC handles the SQL request and converts it into a request the individual database system understands.
ODBC was created by the SQL Access Group and released in September, 1992. Microsoft Windows was the first to provide an ODBC product, but versions now exist for UNIX, OS/2, and Macintosh platforms.
In the newer distributed object architecture called CORBA, the Persistent Object Service (POS) is a superset of both the Call-Level Interface and ODBC. When writing programs in Java and using the JDBC API, you can use a product that includes a JDBC-ODBC "bridge" program to reach ODBC-accessible databases.

OLAP = On-Line Analytical Processing

[TechWeb]: Decision support software that allows the user to quickly analyze information that has been summarized into multidimensional views and hierarchies. For example, OLAP tools are used to perform trend analysis on sales and financial information. They can enable users to drill down into masses of sales statistics in order to isolate the products that are the most volatile.

Traditional OLAP products, also known as Multidimensional OLAP, or MOLAP, summarize transactions into multidimensional views ahead of time. User queries on these types of databases are extremely fast, because the consolidation has already been done. OLAP places the data into a cube structure that can be rotated by the user, which is particularly suited for financial summaries.

Ophavsret = Copyright

OSA = Office Start Application
The OSA is a program (C:\Programmer\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE) that improves the performance of Office 97 programs.
The Office 97 Setup program places a shortcut to the OSA in the Windows Start folder (osa-s.gif (900 bytes) Microsoft Office-start).
Use ctrl-alt-del to bring up the Task-List to see if Osa is running.

The OSA does the following:

Outlook

Microsoft's most powerful e-mail client integrates e-mail with personal information management and groupware features. It offers calendars, journals, and schedules; a battalion of contact management tools; and the ability to create personal folders and subfolders. If your office runs Microsoft's Exchange Server, employees can use Outlook to share contacts and calendars. You can automate e-mail retrieval, tag messages with notes about follow-up action, and drag and drop Microsoft Office files into e-mail messages.

Outlook Express

This e-mail program is built into Internet Explorer 4.0 and Windows 98. Outlook Express is the successor to Internet Mail and News, which is found in earlier versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Outlook Express supports HTML-formatted mail and offers a few nifty features such as the ability to integrate e-mail with Usenet news and the ability to search big Internet "white pages." It can filter e-mail (useful for automatically deleting spam), and gather messages from multiple ISPs.
